ASI Awakens: Vision of a Beneficial, Decentralized Singularity

Summary

The time to create beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (BGI) at the human level (and soon after, far beyond) is here.

There is still more R&D needed to get to HLAGI (Human-Level AGI), but we have a clear idea what technical problems need to be solved and a variety of solid-looking routes that look promising to solve them.

It seems very likely that, once HLAGI is reached, Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) will probably not be far behind.   An AGI with the technical competence of human scientists and engineers will be able to study itself and improve itself, and scale itself up, triggering a very rapidly advancing “intelligence explosion” which Vinge, Kurzweil and others have referred to as a Singularity.

BGI has potential to be by far the best thing that’s ever happened to humanity – and to life on Earth in general.   It is amazing to be alive at the time of such a fascinating and tremendous transition.

A Beneficial AGI Manifesto
Eurykosmotron, Ben GoertzelNovember 25, 2023

I am actively working to bring Beneficial General Intelligence about, sooner rather than later. And I think you probably should be too.

Let 8 Billion Manifestos Bloom

This “BGI Manifesto” represents one (relatively knowledgeable and reflective) person’s view regarding how we should think about current developments in AI and related areas, and how we should coordinate our future actions toward the goal of creating BGI in the near term.

However, one of the positions put forward here is that these huge developments should be made by a wide swath of humanity in a cooperative way.

So we should not be closely adhering to anybody’s manifesto.  We should each be doing our best to understand and figure things out on our own — based on valuable input from everyone around us.

My hope is that this “manifesto” may have some value to you in the process of evolving and crafting your own perspective, in rich and open communication with the others around you.

Cross-paradigm AI designs & decentralised infrastructure for beneficial general intelligence

April 19, 2024 (20:23)
By: AI for Good

As we transition from the era of task-specific Narrow AIs to the next phase of Artificial General Intelligences, it’s important that our early-stage AGI systems are not only focused on compassionate tasks involving close interactions with diverse humans, but also that the infrastructure and architectures of these AGIs embody principles of diversity.

Cognitive architectures that integrate representations and algorithms from multiple paradigms, such as neural-symbolic systems, provide a more robust foundation for understanding the richness of human value systems across various contexts.

Decentralized infrastructures that (using blockchain and other tools) avoid giving excessive power to any specific parties provide arenas in which a breadth of AI agents can compete, cooperate and coalesce into emergent networks, incorporating ideas and values from all aspects of global human society and culture.

Via pursuing this sort of approach rather than e.g. single-architecture, single-company avenues toward AGI, we can maximize both the intelligence and the wisdom and human benefit of the AGI systems we create and educate.

Ben Goertzel is one of the most interesting minds in the artificial intelligence community. He is the founder of SingularityNET, designer of OpenCog AI framework, formerly a director of research at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, Chief Scientist of Hanson Robotics, the company that created the Sophia Robot. He has been a central figure in the AGI community for many years, including in the Conference on Artificial General Intelligence.

Ben Goertzel: AGI, SingularityNET and Decentralized AI

November 6, 2024 (56:30)

In this episode of the Eye on AI podcast, we dive into the world of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with Ben Goertzel, CEO of SingularityNET and a leading pioneer in AGI development.

Ben shares his vision for building machines that go beyond task-specific capabilities to achieve true, human-like intelligence. He explores how AGI could reshape society, from revolutionizing industries to redefining creativity, learning, and autonomous decision-making.

Throughout the conversation, Ben discusses his unique approach to AGI, which combines decentralized AI systems and blockchain technology to create open, scalable, and ethically aligned AI networks.

He explains how his work with SingularityNET aims to democratize AI, making AGI development transparent and accessible while mitigating risks associated with centralized control. Ben also delves into the philosophical and ethical questions surrounding AGI, offering insights into consciousness, the role of empathy, and the potential for building machines that not only think but also align with humanity’s best values.

He shares his thoughts on how decentralized AGI can avoid the narrow, profit-driven goals of traditional AI and instead evolve in ways that benefit society as a whole.

This episode offers a thought-provoking glimpse into the future of AGI, touching on the technical challenges, societal impact, and ethical considerations that come with creating truly intelligent machines.

Ben’s perspective will leave you questioning not only what AGI can achieve, but also how we can guide it toward a positive future.
